Theme related children's crafts and activities for children's birthday parties

Slithering Snakes
Not all snakes are scary! Your guests will love making their own boas and rattlesnakes to wear around their necks. Ask each guest to bring their own necktie, or purchase some from a thrift store. Open the large end of the tie, carefully cutting the threads apart. Stuff each tie with polyester fiberfill, making sure to push some all the way to the skinny end. Afterwards, sew the end up or glue it shut with a hot glue gun. Provide felt, glitter, wiggly eyes, pompoms, buttons, etc. and decorate!

Zoo Expedition
Most people do not get the chance to live like the Wild Thornberrys, traveling all over the world in search of exotic places, plants and animals. Treat your guests to a day in the life of the Thornberry family with a trip to the zoo. Or, if you prefer, arrange to have a trainer from your local zoo come over and bring some animals for a live demonstration. Just be sure to find out exactly what the trainer plans on bringing before they show up.

Unlock the Commvee
Help the Wild Thornberrys get back into the commvee - their home on wheels that drives, floats and swims! To prepare the game, draw a picture of the Thornberry’s commvee on a large piece of cardboard. Make the door handle and keyhole large enough to be obvious to your guests.

Cut out a cardboard key for each guest and attach a piece of tape to the back. Explain to your guests that the object of the game is to place their key closest to the keyhole in order to unlock the commvee. Blindfold each guest in turn, and spin them 3 times. When they are facing the commvee, let them go! Award a small prize to the winner.

Animal Trivia
Pair up your party guests (three is o.k. too) and put a sticker (or a tape a picture) of an animal on each child's back. Have the children try to guess what the animal is by asking questions that can be answered with only "yes" or "no." For example, "Do I live in the jungle?” “Do I have stripes?”, etc. This is a great way to get the kids to interact and break the ice for kids who are not acquainted.

Jungle Knots
This game will make your party guests all tied up with laughter. Ask your guests to stand in a circle facing inward. Everyone extends his or her right hand into the ring and takes a hold of someone else’s hand. Then, they do the same with their left hands. See if they can untangle the “knot” by stepping over, ducking under people, or turning around. Whatever happens, they can’t let go of hands!

Musical Animal Acts
Everyone gets into the act with this fun variation of musical chairs. Set up one fewer chair than the number of guests at your party. Start the music and have the children walk in a circle around the chairs, until you stop the music. When the music stops, the children try to sit in one of the chairs. The player left standing must pull the name of an animal, written on a piece of paper, out of a hat and act it out while the other guests try to guess what the animal is. Start the music again and repeat the game until all the animals in the hat have been acted out.

Ostrich Egg Relay Race
Separate the children into two single-file lines, facing the same direction. Place an ostrich egg (small balloon) between the knees of each child who is first in line. When the race begins, the first child turns to the second person in line, who must grasp the "egg" between his/her knees. The second child passes it to the third, and so on until the balloon successfully reaches the end of the line. If anyone drops the egg, the team must start over!

Elephant Peanut Hunt
The elephants’ favorite food is missing! Can you help them hunt down their peanuts before snack time? Hide peanuts throughout the house or party area. Based on the age of the children, put them in easy or hard places. Give your hunters a sack to put their peanuts in and let them loose to collect as many as they can find. It’s fun to see just how many peanuts actually make it the sacks!

Pigs in a Blanket
Your guests are sure to squeal over these delectable delights. Purchase your favorite brand of hot dogs, cheese, and refrigerator croissants. Slice hot dogs lengthwise and cut cheese into strips. Unroll croissants and stuff them with hot dogs and cheese. Roll croissants back up and bake as directed, or until golden brown.

These delicious treats are so good, your party guests will clean every last crumb from their plates. Don't be surprised if they make pigs of themselves and come back for more!

Monkey Madness
Your guests will be swinging from the trees like Eliza and Darwin when they get their hands on these frosty floats! You’ll need milk, bananas, unsweetened cocoa, a blender, glasses (or hollowed coconuts for a jungle effect) and straws.

Combine 2 cups milk, 1 medium banana (in chunks), and 1 teaspoon of cocoa in a blender. (This serves about 2 guests. You may double the recipe depending on the size of your blender.) Whirl ingredients until smooth. Pour into hollow coconut shells for a special jungle effect, or pour into fancy glasses and serve with a straw. Repeat until you have enough for everyone invited.

Bugs on a Log
Even the smallest creatures on the planet are important! Fill celery stalks with peanut butter. Keep feathery ends for decoration, and place “bugs” (raisins) along the length of the stalk for a surprise you’re party guests are sure to love.

Edible Animals
This recipe can also double as a fun activity if you choose. Simply make your favorite sugar cookie recipe. Roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to make lions, tigers, bears and other exotic animals shapes.

Bake according to recipe. When cooled, decorate the cookies with colored icing, sprinkles, small candies, etc. Or, set out the bowls of icing and decorations so the kids can decorate their own special cookie. They’ll have lots of fun making and tasting their artwork. Plus, you’ll have a wonderful favor to send home with them as a reminder of your party.
