Crafts
& Activities
Theme
related children's crafts and activities for children's birthday parties.
Rattlesnake
Ruckus
Place some dried beans into
a small plastic bottle (such as a film canister). Place the bottle inside a sock.
Stuff the sock with newspapers and tie off the end. Seat your guests in a circle
and toss the rattlesnake around the circle to music (like hot potato game). When
music stops the one bitten (has the rattlesnake) by the rattlesnake is out of
the game. Continue until one person is left.
Round
Up the Herd
For this game you will need two brooms, a long string to
mark your course, rope, and six balloons (and a few extra in case any pop). Rope
off an area in your yard or home to make a "corral." Inside it, make
an obstacle course using boxes, chairs, bushes, trees, or other inanimate objects.
Mark the path of your obstacle course with string. Divide your party guests into
two teams and line up both teams at the starting line. Give the first person in
each line a broom and 3 balloons. (Be sure to use different colored balloons for
each team). Each player must use the broom to herd their wild ponies (balloons)
through the course inside the corral. To complete their turn, each guest must
herd their balloons through the entire course before passing the broom and balloons
to the next player. If a balloon pops during a players turn, they must take
a new balloon to the starting line. The first team to finish the course, wins!
Sharpshooting Contest
For
this activity, you will need a squirt-gun for each guest and several lightweight
plastic bottles. Set the bottles up along a fence, ledge or picnic table so that
each guest has one bottle directly in front of him or her. Have a contest to see
who can knock over their bottle first! For older children, divide your guests
into teams. Set up three bottles for each team, and have a race. When the first
player on each team knocks over all three bottles, he or she must set them up
quickly for the next player, and so on, until each team member has knocked down
the bottles using their squirt-gun. The first team to finish wins!
Lasso
Contest
For this activity, you can use the same objects and the "corral"
from the first activity. Simply tie a rope into a large circle and let each party
guest take a turn trying to toss it around a sawhorse, chair, etc. For added fun,
place a cowboy hat on the guests head when it is their turn to lasso, and
make them feel like a real cowpoke!
Storytime
Seat your guests in a circle and exchange stories about the Wild West!
This is a great activity if your party is in the evening. If you cant gather
around a real campfire, seat your guests in circle and dim the lights to set the
mood. If youd prefer, rent a video with a Wild West theme. This is a great
activity to keep the kids entertained until parents come to pick them up.

Saddlebag
Surprises
After a long, hot day on the ranch, satisfy your cowgirls and
boys with these hearty pocket meals! Before the party, brown 1/2 lb. lean ground
beef and 1/4 chopped onion in a frying pan. Drain grease and cool. Stir in a 12-oz.
jar of pizza sauce, 2 Tbs. chopped olives, 1 tsp. dried, crushed basil, and 1/2
tsp. dried, crushed oregano. Slice 4 French rolls in half lengthwise. Hollow out
the insides within 1/2 in. of the edges. Sprinkle grated cheese in the bottom,
spoon meat mixture over it, and sprinkle more cheese on top. Place the tops of
the rolls back on, wrap each in foil, and bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.
Serves 4.
Campfire Smores
If you cant have a real campfire to roast marshmallows, you can
easily make these old favorites in your microwave. Simply place two squares of
chocolate on half of a graham cracker. Heat in the microwave until the chocolate
is shiny. Let each guest add marshmallows and put the other half of the graham
cracker on top. Remind everyone that the chocolate is HOT so that no one burns
themselves. Graham cracker halves and chocolate can also be placed in the oven
under the broiler. Be sure to keep an eye out so that the chocolate doesnt
burn!
Beans and Dogs
Set the mood and serve pork and beans on tin plates. Seat your guests
in a circle, as if they are eating around a campfire!
Cactus
Juice
Pour lemon-lime soda into a large punch bowl. Just before serving,
add scoops of lime sherbet and watch the punch bubble into green cactus juice!
For a cooler drink, add drops of green food color into ice cube trays filled with
water, freeze, and drop the cubes into the punch bowl.
Trail
Mix
Set out a healthy trail treat for your guests to munch on while everyone
arrives, during games, etc. To make your own trail mix, combine your childs
favorite ingredients, such as raisins, chocolate pieces, pretzels, cereal, or
nuts. Provide a mix without nuts if one of your guests is allergic to them.
Sufferin
Sarsaparilla
Your guests will be sufferin to get their hands on
this quick and easy sarsaparilla soda. Before the party, fill several ice trays
with water, place a cherry into each compartment and freeze. Pour 1 Tbs. of grenadine
syrup into each glass. Drop a frozen cherry ice cube into each glass. Pour cream
soda over the ice, and watch a pink, foamy drink appear!
Pigs
in a Blanket
Your guests are sure to squeal over these delectable delights.
Purchase your favorite brand of hot dogs, cheese, and refrigerator croissants.
Slice hot dogs lengthwise and cut cheese into strips. Unroll croissants and stuff
them with hot dogs and cheese. Roll croissants back up and bake as directed, or
until golden brown.
These
delicious treats are so good, your party guests will clean every last crumb from
their plates. Don't be surprised if they make pigs of themselves and come back
for more!
