Birthday Buccaneers
As everyone arrives, transform them into treasure-seeking pirates with eyepatches, face paint and temporary tattoos! To make your own eyepatches, cut pieces of black felt and sew them to strands of black elastic. (Measure you child’s head to get the approximate length for the elastic before making each guest an eyepatch.) Give your little buccaneers more character using face paint to make mustaches and scars. Add temporary tattoos to their arms and give them pirate names if you wish. Once everyone has been transformed into hardened sailors, invite them below deck (into your basement) for games and activities!

Space Telescopes
Every young treasure seeker at your party needs a telescope to spot supernovas, black holes and mutinous pirates as they travel through the galaxy in search of hidden treasure troves! Before the party, collect paper towel tubes until you have one for every guest. Paint the tubes gold or silver, or cover them with foil instead. When your guests arrive, provide art supplies so the kids can decorate their telescopes. Set out markers, construction paper, glue, glitter, scraps of fabric, etc. Let the children be creative and have fun!

Black Hole Bean Bag Toss
This is a great activity for kids of all ages. Before the party, purchase several bean bags suitable for tossing, or make your own by filling socks with dried beans or uncooked rice. Decorate a large piece of cardboard like a galaxy - with planets, stars and the ship from Treasure Planet. In the center, cut out a hole large enough to toss the bean bags through.

To play the game, hold the galaxy about ten feet away from the location the children will be standing and tossing. Give each child several chances to toss the bean bags into the “black hole.” Award a small prize to the player with the best aim!

Intergalactic Treasure Hunt
With a little creativity, you can turn an ordinary treasure hunt into a Treasure Planet adventure! First, make signs for several rooms in your home and decorate them accordingly. For example, the “Black Hole” should be as dark as possible, and the “Lagoon Nebula Galaxy” could have planets hanging from the ceiling or glow-in-the-dark constellations. Create a “Space Storm” room with metallic streamers dangling from the ceiling. Set the storm in motion with fans at each end of the room. Dim the lights for more fun.

Once you’ve transformed several rooms, make a treasure map. It should mark a route traveling throughout “space” to every room, without indicating exactly where the loot is. (Make sure the loot is well hidden with enough prizes or grab bags for every child.)

When it’s time to play, give the birthday child the treasure map and let the kids explore each area on it. Instruct them to look for a clue, written on a slip of paper, in each room. Once the kids have visited every room and gathered the clues, help them find the treasure if they haven’t already found it!

Note: a fun variation of this activity is to hide the final treasures in a locked trunk. Include a key with each clue. Once the children have collected all the keys and have discovered where the loot is, they’ll have fun trying each key until the correct one opens the treasure box.
