Crafts & Activities
Theme
related children's crafts and activities for children's birthday parties.
Note: Parent participation
is required for all activities.
Musical
Bears
Invite guests to bring their favorite bear to the party for a fun
twist on an old favorite! Seat children in a circle. Pass the birthday childs
favorite bear around the circle when the music starts. When the music stops, the
child who is caught "bear-handed" is out. Continue until there is only
one child left. Let the winner choose a different bear and play again, or vary
the game to play "Hot Potato" with a bear.
Magic
Play-Doh®
This activity is wonderful for youngsters who are still
developing their coordination skills. Simply purchase several containers of Play-Doh
and enough teddy bear (or fun-shaped) cookie cutters for each guest to have one.
Before you start, be sure to put a protective covering on your play surface so
it doesnt get damaged. Then, place a small amount of Play-Doh and one cookie
cutter in front of each guest. This activity is sure to keep their hands and imaginations
busy for a while. Later your guests can take their cookie cutter home as a reminder
of your wonderful party!
Teddy
Bear Bean Bag Toss
Draw a picture of a teddy bear (mouth open) on a large
piece of cardboard. Cut a hole where the mouth should be. Make two bean bags from
a pair of socks filled with dried beans, and tie with a rubber band. Draw designs
on the bean bags for more fun. Stand the teddy bear target against a chair and
mark a line on the floor a short distance away. Give each child a turn to throw
the bean bags into the teddys mouth. Let parents help the children aim,
if they are too young to do so.
Storytime
with Teddy
What could be better than curling up with your teddy bear
to listen to a story? Seat your guests in a circle with their special teddies
to listen to a story. Even though they may not understand all the words, just
sitting together and looking at the pictures will be fun. Or, if youd prefer,
you can let them watch a video or cartoon with a teddy bear theme. This is a wonderful
activity for keeping the kids entertained, and it will help them calm down after
more excited activities.
Make
& Take Teddy Placemats
You may want to enlist the help of other parents
for this activity. Purchase a teddy bear theme coloring book, crayons, thin pieces
of cardboard (for stiffening the mats), and a roll of clear Con-Tact paper. Remove
pages from the coloring book and cut cardboard to match the size of two pages.
(Cut the Con-Tact paper a little larger). At the party, give each child two pages
and let them have fun. When theyre finished, lay the pictures on top of
the cardboard. Cover with the clear Con-Tact paper.
Delectable Treats
Note:
If older children will not be present, and the following snacks are too difficult
for the birthday child and young guests to eat, consider making some of the items
and using them as a creative centerpiece at mealtime, or serve them to the adults
who will be attending the party. For the little ones, try serving soft, simple
treats such as cupcakes, pudding or ice cream.
"Cub"cakes
Your guests will love these cute cupcakes! Bake 2 dozen chocolate cupcakes
according to package directions, or use your own recipe. When they are
cool, remove liners. Frost the top of 12 chocolate cupcakes. On the
top of each frosted cupcake, place an unfrosted cupcake upside-down,
securing it with a toothpick. Frost the upside-down cupcakes on all
sides with chocolate frosting. Break several Oreo cookies in half and
place two halves on top of each cupcake for ears. Use chocolate chips,
M&Ms, or other small candies of your choice to make eyes,
a nose and a mouth. Send these adorable teddies home with your guests,
or serve them instead of birthday cake.
Honey
Bear Punch
All bears love honey! Mix 2 quarts lemonade, 3 quarts unsweetened
pineapple juice, and 2/3 cup honey. Bears also love berries, so make special ice
cubes by dropping a few blueberries into ice cube tray compartments, add water
and freeze.
Teddy Bear
Sandwiches
Get the gang together for these fun-shaped sandwiches! Make
your childs favorite kind of sandwich, and use bear-shaped cookie cutters
to cut them into fun treats. Let guests choose their own shape by selecting from
a tray of sandwiches.
Biscuit
Bears
Send each guest home with their own edible teddy bear! Youll
need vegetable spray, 4 packages of refrigerator biscuits, raisins, and poppy
seeds. Divide each package of biscuits in half, and knead each portion. Form 8
balls of dough. Separate each lump of dough into the following parts: 1 large
ball for a body; 1 small ball for head; 8 smaller balls for ears, hands, feet,
nose, and tail. Spray a baking sheet with vegetable spray (or cover with foil)
and set each body on it. Place a head above each body, and add ears, hands, feet,
nose, and tail. Poke raisins in the center of the ears and the nose. Make eyes
and a belly button. Add more raisins to hands and feet for claws. Sprinkle bodies
with poppy/sesame seeds to make "fur," if desired. Bake according to
package directions, until golden brown. Cool and enjoy!
