Crafts & Activities

Theme related children's crafts and activities for children's birthday parties.

Samurai Training Course
Train your party guests to be the best warriors they can be with this creative obstacle course!

Line the children up single file. Provide props for them to wear as they run the course, such as a karate robe with toy swords tucked in the belt.

One by one, each child runs through a series of obstacles. Some ideas: walk along a narrow board to learn balance, dig in the sandbox and rescue a doll to learn bravery, use a toy sword to knock enemies (boxes) off a picnic table to learn swordsmanship, and shoot arrows (or toss balls) through a hula hoop to learn accuracy. Be creative and add any challenges you like for your samurais-in-training.

When the kids are done, give each child an “official” certificate of completion.

Balloon Battle
Warriors can practice their battle cries in this fun game! Before the party, insert a small, lightweight party favor (such as a sticker) into the opening of a balloon. Inflate the balloon, tie, and repeat until you have one for each guest. At the party, give a balloon to each warrior, who must defeat his “opponent” by sitting on it, jumping on it, kicking it, etc. Your guests will enjoy the surprises they find inside the balloons and you’ll love that they’re not battling each other!

Warrior Belts
For this activity, you’ll need a light-colored cloth belt (or strip of fabric) for each guest attending the party. The strips of fabric should be 3-4 inches wide, so the kids have room for decorating. The strips should also be long enough to wrap around the waist and tied.

You’ll also need to provide fabric glue, fabric pens, glitter, felt scraps and any other materials you think your guests would enjoy using to decorate their belts. Encourage the kids to be creative and have fun. Write names on each one and make sure the belts have time to dry before the kids go home!

Samurai Strength
Help the young warriors at your party become big and strong in order to help Samurai Jack defeat his nemesis, Aku! To prepare for the game, inflate 50-100 small balloons. When it’s time to play, divide the kids in two teams. Pick one child on each team to be the samurai-in-training. Remaining players are trainers.

Gather teams in separate areas and divide balloons equally between them. Dress the samurais-in-training in union suits (one-piece long underwear) over their clothes. When you say “GO,” trainers stuff as many balloons as possible into the union suits. Give the teams two minutes to do this. When time is up, let everyone admire how the samurais-in-training have become big, strong warriors! Then remove and count the balloons. The team that uses the most, wins!

Martial Arts Demonstration
Arrange for a local martial arts teacher or family friend to come give a demonstration at your party! It doesn’t have to be long or complicated to entertain your guests. Let the teacher know the ages of your guests ahead of time, so he or she can prepare an age-appropriate lesson. Also, ask the teacher to talk about safety before showing the kids anything. Let the birthday child help with the demonstration, and don’t forget to take photos to capture the fun.

Samurai Adventure
Wrap up your party with a Samurai Jack video, book, or other favorite warrior adventure. This activity is a great way to calmly entertain your guests while waiting for parents to arrive.

Pinatas

Piņatas

Pinata Fillers

Kids love the excitement of trying to break open a piñata and see the treasures rain down. This 96-piece assortment of toys and candy is perfect for eight guests, and will bring even more fun to your piñata activity.

Pull-String Piñata Kit
Turn your piñata into a pull-string for a gentler piñata activity. Kit includes trap door release and 20 pull strings.

Tasty Treats And Menu Ideas

Poison Ivy Punch
Create a drink only the strongest warriors can handle! Before the party, purchase plastic ivy from a craft store, and cut it into pieces. Then, make some lime Kool-Aid® and pour it into ice cube trays. Add a piece of ivy to each ice cube compartment and freeze.

On the party day, add green food coloring to your child’s favorite beverage (white grape juice, apple juice and lemon-lime soda work well.) When it’s time to serve the punch, add a few “poisoned” cubes to each child’s glass. Your guests will be delighted with this dangerously fun drink!

Fruit Swords
You will need kabob skewers and a variety of your child’s favorite fruits. Put melon balls, berries, apple chunks, etc. on the skewers and serve them sticking out of the upside down half of a melon. The visual effect is best if all the fruits are arranged in the same order, with a strawberry speared on top. Let each samurai pull his or her own sword from the melon!

Finger-Sized Teriyaki Meatballs
Your guests will love these tasty treats that are small enough to eat with fingers or chopsticks! To make them, combine 1 lb. lean ground beef, 1/4 cup bread crumbs, 1 egg, a bit of milk, and 2 Tbs. Teriyaki sauce in a bowl. (To make your own Teriyaki sauce, mix 1/3 soy sauce, 1/4 tsp. ground ginger, or 3/4 tsp. grated fresh ginger, 1 Tbs. sugar, and 2 garlic cloves.)

Form meat mixture into 1-inch balls and dip each ball into the Teriyaki sauce. Place the meatballs slightly apart on a foil-lined baking sheet. (Chill and cover if made in advance.)

Bake uncovered at 425 degrees F for 8-10 minutes. Watch them carefully to make sure they do not burn. When cooked, pierce each meatball with a food pick and display on a large tray or platter. For older children, serve with chopsticks on a bed of rice.

Fortune Cookies
Every warrior wants to know his destiny, and these fortune-telling cookies can help! You’ll need to make a personalized fortune for each guest before cooking and keep each guest’s cookie in a bag labeled with his or her name after inserting the special message into it.

To make the cookies, combine 1/4 cup flour, 2 Tbs. sugar, 1 Tbs. cornstarch, and a dash of salt in a bowl. Add 2 Tbs. cooking oil and one egg white (discard the yolk). Stir until smooth. Add 1 Tbs. water. Mix well.

Make cookies one at a time, pouring 1 Tbs. of batter on a hot skillet coated with vegetable spray. Allow batter to spread to a 3 1/2-inch circle. Cook over medium heat for 4 minutes, or until lightly browned. Turn cookie over; cook 1 more minute.

Place warm cookie on a paper towel and blot. While it is still warm, place a fortune in the center, fold cookie in half, and fold again over the edge of a bowl to create the classic fortune cookie shape. Once you’ve inserted a personalized fortune, make sure you remember who it is for.

At the party, pass out each guest’s special cookie to him or her personally, and don’t forget to tell everyone that the cookies contain their secret fortunes!
