Crafts & Activities

Theme related children's crafts and activities for children's birthday parties.

Find Pikachu
Team Rocket, a band of Pokémon poachers, has captured Pikachu! Pikachu, Ash Ketchum’s first Pokémon, has powers that overcome any other Pikachu, which makes him extremely valuable. Help Ash find Pikachu by sending your little Pokémon trainers out to search for him!

To play this game, select a child to be "Pikachu." Honor the birthday child on their special day and let them be Pikachu first. Start the rest of the children counting to 50 while the birthday child hides somewhere near the party room. When the guests have counted to 50, release them to look for the birthday child. As each child finds Pikachu, tell them to hide with him or her. One by one, the guests will slowly disappear from the party area. The last child to discover Pikachu’s hiding place becomes Pikachu in the next game. Your little Pokémon trainers will have a hard time containing their giggles when they are all packed into the hiding place like sardines!

Name That Pokémon!
This game is only for loyal Pokémon fans! Write the names of different Pokémon characters on masking tape and stick one on each child’s back. In order to discover what Pokémon character they are, guests must ask each other questions that can be answered with "Yes" or "No." If kids have trouble thinking of questions, help them think of some and give hints, if necessary. Keep a list of Pokémon characters handy: Ash, Brock, Misty, Pikachu, Charmander, Team Rocket (Jessie, James and Meowth), Prof. Oak, Pidgey, Rattata, Kadabra, Samurai, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, etc. Award guests with Poképrizes when they guess who they are!

Recess Tag
Training is tough at the Pokémon Institute and recess isn’t over until there’s only one Pokémon left standing! Tell your guests to spread out in the party area (or better yet, outside where there’s room to run). Let the birthday child be the first "tagger." The tagger tries to tag all his Pokémon opponents in order to defeat them. If a player is tagged, he or she must sit down. The last Pokémon alive gets to becomes the next tagger!

Poké Balls
Every Pokémon trainer needs a Poké Ball so they can catch Pokémon and train them! Send your guests home with a party favor they can make themselves. Purchase styrofoam balls at a craft store, and provide felt, fabric scraps, glue, glitter, markers, etc. to decorate them with. Encourage your guests to be creative. They’ll love pretending to capture Pokémon with their very own Poké Ball!

Gotta Catch ‘Em All!
For special party favors, purchase a Pokémon bean bag or trading card for each guest. Gather the children together and seat them in a group. One at a time, invite each player to sit in a chair, or on the couch, in front of the whole group. Hold a bean bag, or trading card, over the player’s head, so they cannot see it, but everyone else can. While the player tries to guess what Pokémon character, or trading card, is above their head, the audience can give the player clues. For example, the audience can hint what color the character is, who it evolved from, etc., just as long as they do not give away the character’s name. Once the player has guessed correctly, he or she gets to choose a bean bag, or trading card to take home. You’ll be amazed at how much the children know about the different characters!

Pinatas

Piņatas

Pinata Fillers

Kids love the excitement of trying to break open a piñata and see the treasures rain down. This 96-piece assortment of toys and candy is perfect for eight guests, and will bring even more fun to your piñata activity.

Pull-String Piñata Kit
Turn your piñata into a pull-string for a gentler piñata activity. Kit includes trap door release and 20 pull strings.

Tasty Treats And Menu Ideas

Misty’s Bugs on a Log
Although bugs are one of her greatest fears, Misty doesn’t mind these "bugs." These critters are just to add fun and a little silliness to your party. Cut celery into 6-inch lengths and fill with peanut butter. Put raisins (bugs) along the length of the celery in an uneven pattern. This recipe is fun for the birthday child to help prepare before the party.

Charmander’s Punch
Ash adopted a Charmander when an evil trainer named Damion abandoned it. Let your Pokémon trainers rejoice Charmander’s survival with this bubbly drink! Mix apple or cranberry juice with lemon-lime soda in a large pitcher. Pour into fancy plastic glasses and drop a strawberry (or other fruit) into each glass for an added touch!

Mt. Moon Milkshake
On your Pokémon trainers’ journey to Mt. Moon, give them a scrumptious shake for extra energy! Combine 2 cups of milk, 1 medium banana (in chunks), and 1 tsp. unsweetened cocoa in a blender. (Serves 2) Repeat steps until you have enough for everyone invited. Whirl ingredients until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve with a straw.

Fabulous Fortune Cookies
This recipe also makes a fun activity! Write fortunes on small pieces of paper before cooking, or let guests write their own (without showing them to anyone) while you prepare the ingredients! Combine 1/4 cup flour, 2 Tbs. sugar, 1 Tbs. cornstarch, and a dash of salt. Add 2 Tbs. cooking oil and one egg white. Stir until smooth. Add 1 Tbs. water. Mix well. Make cookies one at a time, pouring 1 Tbs. of batter on a hot skillet coated with vegetable spray. Allow batter to spread to a 3 1/2-inch circle. Cook over medium heat for 4 minutes, or until lightly browned. Turn cookie over; cook 1 more minute. Place warm cookie on a paper towel and blot. While it is still warm, place a fortune in the center, fold cookie in half, and fold again over the edge of a bowl to create classic fortune cookie shape!

Pokémon Pizza
Downsize normal pizza for your little Pokémons. Split English muffins in half and top with prepared pizza sauce and shredded American or mozzarella cheese. Place a muffin half in front of each child and let them decorate their pizza with their favorite toppings: pepperoni, sliced olives, mushrooms, green peppers, Canadian bacon, pineapple, etc. Bake pizzas on a cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 5-10 minutes, or until cheese melts.

Pikachu's Punch
In the spirit of Pokémon, create a drink that looks like Pikachu! Pour a glass of lemon-lime soda for each guest and add add a drop or two of yellow food coloring. Place two maraschino cherries into each glass, and ask the children to look inside and tell you what they see . . . perhaps this is what Pikachu's cheeks are made of!?!

Pokémon Cake Directions
These directions describe steps necessary to make the Pokémon cake shown on the cover of our Winter 1999 catalog. Before undertaking this project, plan out a schedule. Consider that you will need to bake a two-layer square cake and frost it with a thin layer of your child’s favorite frosting before making candy melt decorations (optional) and rolled fondant icing.

Fondant is thick, pliable icing that can be tinted, flavored, and shaped any way you like. The recipe below is a simple uncooked fondant recipe. Although there are cooked versions, these recipes are generally more complex and time-consuming than uncooked versions. Some novelty stores sell pre-made fondant, but it is not a common supermarket item.

Rolled Fondant Icing
If this is your first attempt at making fondant, make it in advance, or allow yourself plenty of extra time to work with it. If the fondant becomes too sticky or too dry it can be very frustrating to work with.

To avoid frustration at the last minute, it is helpful to make more than you’ll actually need. (This will also provide extra fondant for decorations.) Uncooked fondant can be wrapped well and refrigerated overnight or frozen for several weeks. Bring to room temperature before using.

Ingredients:

1 egg white
1 tablespoon cold water
2 Tablespoons light cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
5 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
waxed paper (for rolling)
1 tube of red decorating gel.
(Double the ingredients to make two batches)

Directions:

(1.) Blend together egg white, water, cream and vanilla. Add the sifted sugar gradually. (Using unsifted sugar will result in lumpy fondant.) Knead mixture until it is smooth and glossy. Repeat steps to make a second batch of fondant. Cover both batches of fondant with a damp cloth, place in an airtight container, and let stand at room temperature for 1 hour before using.

(2.) Tint one batch of the fondant blue to cover the sides of the cake. Knead in blue paste color, or use drops of blue food coloring. Knead the fondant until the color is evenly distributed.

(3.) Divide the second batch of fondant into thirds. Tint one third red for the borders along the edges of the cake. Combine the remaining two thirds and tint yellow to make the top layer of the cake. Use paste color or food coloring and knead each ball of fondant until the color is evenly distributed.

(4.) Roll blue fondant out with a rolling pin to approximately ¼” thick. If the fondant sticks to the rolling surface, cover the surface with waxed paper. Cut a piece of fondant slightly larger than one side of your cake and hold it against the cake. Press the edges against the cake to secure it. Repeat the process until all sides are covered with a layer of blue fondant.

(5.) After the sides are in place, roll out the yellow fondant to about ¼” thick. Drape the fondant over the cake, and cut off the excess around the edges. If fondant cracks or breaks when attempting to lay it over the cake, simply press edges together with your fingertips to patch holes. If necessary, use excess fondant to patch the cracks and smooth the pieces together with your fingers.

(6.) Next, roll out the red fondant to approximately ¼” thick. Cut two strips of fondant to fit each side of the cake (8 strips total.) Each strip should be about ½” wide. Place one strip of red fondant on each side of the cake at the base. Then, make a red border around the top of the cake as well.

(7.) Using the tube of red decorating gel, draw five large swirls on top of the cake, one in each corner, and one in the center. Fill in the gaps with smaller swirls.

(8.) Press blue candy drops (recipe below) into the sides of the cake. ** If you’re short on time, a good alternative to fondant is simply using thick white frosting. Tint it the appropriate colors for your Pokémon cake using drops of food coloring.

Blue Candy Drops
Create a finishing touch to your Pokémon cake with these edible blue balls made of Candy Melts! Candy Melts come in a variety of colors and flavors (vanilla, chocolate, butterscotch, etc.) Choose white candy melts for this recipe, so you can color the balls blue with food coloring.

Note: If you choose white chocolate candy melts, it is best to chop or flake them into pieces before heating. White chocolate will turn into a solid, grainy mass if overheated, so monitor it carefully during the melting process.

Ingredients:

14 oz. bag of Candy Melts (available at craft stores)
1/3 cup light corn syrup
blue food coloring

Directions:

(1.) Melt Candy Melts according to package directions. Add 4 drops of food coloring and stir to blend. Add additional food coloring to deepen the hue, if necessary.

Add corn syrup; stir to blend. Place mixture on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper; let set at room temperature to dry (overnight). Wrap and store at room temperature until needed.

(2.) When ready to use, the mixture will seem very hard; knead a small portion at a time until workable. If mixture gets too soft, refrigerate it briefly.

Form the mixture into small balls of varying sizes. Gently press balls to flatten them slightly and stick them to the side of your Pokémon cake. Arrange balls in an uneven pattern for the best effect.
