Theme related children's crafts and activities for children's birthday parties.

Silly Board Sport Relay
Combine all your favorite board sports in this wacky relay game! First collect items from family and friends that represent different board sports, for example, a skateboard, surfer shorts, winter hat or scarf, etc. Collect two of each item.

At the party, divide your guests into two teams. Give each team the same set of props, so the level of difficulty will be equal. Place a chair for each team a short distance away from the starting line.

To begin the game, the first person on each team must put on the surfer shorts, hat and scarf (or whatever items you choose) and travel to the chair, keeping at least one foot on the skateboard. After reaching the chair, the player runs back to the team (carrying the board) and passes the props to the next player. The game continues until everyone has had a turn. The first team to finish, wins!

Musical Beach Towels
This game is for the wave riders at your party! Lay out beach towels (one fewer than players) in a large, open room, or outside if the weather permits. Put on surfer music (such as the Beach Boys) or play something with ocean sounds. Tell the children to begin walking in a circle around the towels.

When you stop the music, each player tries to lay down on a towel. The player who doesn’t get one is out. (Let him or her help decide when to turn off the music in the next round.) Remove a towel and start the music again. Continue until there is only one beach bum left!

Live Demo
Ask a family member or friend to come and demonstrate some skateboarding tricks for the kids. If your child prefers snowboarding or surfing, rent a video instead. Your guests will be impressed, even if it’s not a live demonstration!

Fingerboarding Fun
Since skateboarding may be too difficult for all the youngsters at your party, introduce your guests to fingerboarding - skateboarding with your fingers! It’s a lot of fun, and easy for children to learn.

For the activity, you’ll need to purchase a fingerboard for each guest (available at most toy stores). Let the birthday child demonstrate an easy trick, such as the one below, to show those guests who are unfamiliar with fingerboarding.

The following trick is called “Walk the Dog”:
1. Start with the fingerboard on a flat surface.
2. Place one finger on the front of the board (nose) and one on the back end (tail.) (It’s easiest to use your index and middle finger.)
3. Pivot the board 180 degrees and switch finger placement.
4. Repeat as many times as desired.

Once the children have had a chance to play and practice some moves, let each guest show the rest of the group his or her favorite trick. If you wish, organize a fingerboard “competition” where everyone wins. Pass out awards or prizes for the most creative/difficult move, biggest wipe-out, best name, fastest move, longest air time, etc.

Tasty Treats And Menu Ideas

Skateboard Sandwiches
Give your guests something to smile about with these scrumptious sandwich snacks.

Ingredients: white sandwich bread, your child’s favorite fillers, carrot sticks, whole olives, milk and food coloring.

Directions:
1. Make sandwiches as you normally would. Cut each sandwich in half, remove the crusts, and round the edges to look like a skateboard.
2. Mix 2 Tbs. milk with a few drops of food coloring. Use this edible “paint” to draw names or logos on the skateboards.
3. Stick an olive on the end of each carrot stick to make the wheels and axles.
4. Assemble your skateboards, placing a half sandwich on a pair of carrot sticks.

Ocean Smoothie
This refreshing drink was made for surfing and wakeboarding fans. (Serves 8 children.)

Ingredients:
3 cups ice
3 cups blue sports drink
3 large scoops vanilla ice cream/frozen yogurt

Directions:
Combine ice, sports drink and ice cream in a blender. Halve ingredients to avoid overflow, if necessary. Whirl until smooth and serve.

Power Bars
Energize your board sport athletes with these chewy granola bars:

Ingredients:
4 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2/3 cup margarine
1/2 cup honey
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups miniature chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Combine vanilla, margarine, honey and brown sugar in a large bowl; mix well.
2. Add oats, flour, and baking soda. Stir in chocolate chips.
3. Press mixture into a lightly greased 9”x13” baking pan.
4. Bake at 325 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
5. Let granola bars cool in the pan completely. Cut into bars and serve!

Snowboarder’s Slush
Your guests will feel like they’re riding the mountain with this cool treat! Fill paper cones with finely crushed ice. Then, pour flavored syrup over the ice for a simply scrumptious slushie.
