Crafts & Activities
Theme related children's crafts and activities for children's birthday parties.

Teaming Up
After all your guests have arrived, let everyone pick a slip of paper from of a hat. The slips of paper should say either “A,” “B” or “C” (to divide up guests in equal teams). Three pieces of paper should also say “You are the captain of your team.” This way, captains can’t choose only their friends. Let the individual teams get together and choose a team name, make up a team cheer, decorate a team banner, etc. During the party, keep track of team points if you wish (3 points for 1st place, 2 for 2nd place, 1 for 3rd place). At the end of the party, see which team has scored the most points!

Workout
Invite a fun-loving high school student, older sibling or parent to come to the party and lead the kids in a workout with stretching or warm-up drills, organize mini games, or teach the kids some plays. Even if your basketball expert isn’t their coach, the kids will still love learning from a “pro.” Tell your guests ahead of time so they can dress appropriately. Invite them to wear a basketball jersey for even more fun!

H-O-R-S-E
To begin this popular shooting game, a leader attempts to make a crazy shot—perhaps backwards, sideways, or one-handed. If the leader succeeds, other players then try to make the same shot. If a shooter fails to make the shot, he or she earns an “H.”

After all players have tried to make the same shot, the leader attempts another crazy shot, and the others try to duplicate it again. If anyone misses the shot on the second round, he or she earns an “O.”

Continue until someone racks up all the letters to spell “HORSE,” eliminating that person from the game. Play until all but one player and the leader are left. The remaining player becomes the new leader.

Let the kids choose a different word other than HORSE for the second game. Use the birthday child’s name, the name of his or her favorite player, or anything the kids would like.

Balloon Pass
Separate the guests at your party into teams and tell each team to form a single-file line, facing the same direction. Place a balloon between the knees of the first child in each line.

When the race begins, the first child in each line turns to face the next person in line. The second child must grasp the balloon with his or her knees and turn to pass it on to the third person, and so on, until the balloon is passed all the way down the line.

If the balloon falls to the ground the team must start over. The first team to successfully pass the balloon down the line, wins!

Sponge Toss Relay
This outdoor game is lots of fun, especially when the sun is shining! To play, you’ll need two containers of water and two identical bowls or buckets.

Divide your guests in teams and line up each team across a large playing area, spacing the kids far enough apart so that the sponge must be tossed from player to player. The container of water and empty bowl should be on opposite ends of the line.

To begin, the player nearest the water container soaks the sponge and tosses it to the next player, and so on until it reaches the end of the line. The last player squeezes out as much water as possible into the empty container and passes the sponge back down the line. The goal is to transfer as much water as possible into the empty container within five minutes. When five minutes have passed, measure the containers to see which team collected more water!

Sports Spectacular
Everyone has their favorite sport, and this activity covers many of them. You will need a large room or yard, and approximately 30 minutes to set up in advance. You can use the following items: (1) small, soft football; (2) 3x5 file cards, or stiff paper to make score cards; (3) masking tape; (4) timer/stopwatch; (5) tape measure; (6) 6 empty beverage cans; (7) softballs or bean bags; (8) low table; (9) an empty egg carton; (10) a referee and a helper (siblings, or guests waiting their turn are great for this!)

The Sports Spectacular has four stations: Football kick, Long Jump, Obstacle Course, and Pyramid Throw. First, determine which stations you want to use, depending on the space you have available, and decide where to locate each one. Next, create a score card for each child: list each station and leave a space to enter their time or distance. Turn this into a fun activity before the games begin and allow guests to decorate their own card!

(1) Football kick: Hang 2 ribbons or use masking tape to make a field goal on the wall, or on the back of a door. Measure an appropriate distance and mark the kickoff spot with masking tape. You can make a tee out of the egg carton or have a helper hold the football. Give each child 3 points every time he/she kicks a field goal. Give all players the same number of turns to score.

(2) Long Jump: This game is a standing long jump, so running starts are not allowed! Mark a starting line with masking tape on the floor. Pull out the tape measure 4-6 feet and tape it down perpendicular to the starting line, so each jump can be easily measured. Mark each jump with a piece of tape and write the player’s name on it. Record each player’s longest jump on their score card.

(3) Obstacle Course: Set up an obstacle course using items you already have around the house. Mark a start/finish line with masking tape and time each player as they run the course. Suggestions: run from the starting line, pick up a jump rope and skip three times; crawl through a tunnel, under a low table, or through a large box; run to a basketball that is set on the ground and bounce it under your leg three times; run backwards to a chair, go around it and skip back to the basketball; bounce the basketball three more times; crawl back through the tunnel/box; jump rope backwards three times; run to the finish line! Record each participants fastest time on their card.

(4) Pyramid Throw: Make your own version of the classic carnival pitching game by setting 6 empty beverage cans in a pyramid on the ground, or a low table. (You can substitute heavier objects for older children.) Mark a throwing line with masking tape. Give each player 2-3 chances to knock down the pyramid using a softball. (Bean bags are a good alternative if the game cannot be set up in an area where balls can be contained.) Score points for the number of cans knocked down, or off the table.

At the end of your sports spectacular, award individual prizes for the fastest time, longest jump, etc. or simply announce the results of each event. Allow guests to repeat some events if they are interested. Let everyone go at their own pace, playing the games as they choose.

Pull-String Piñata Kit
Turn your piñata into a pull-string for a gentler piñata activity. Kit includes trap door release and 20 pull strings.

Tasty Treats And Menu Ideas

If you have access to cafeteria or restaurant trays, set out all your party food on a table and let the kids go through the line choosing their own menu items. For fun, enlist a parent or older sibling to be a food vendor!

The Ultimate Hot Dog
No sporting event is complete without a hot dog!
Add each child’s chosen condiments to his or her hot dog yourself to avoid spills. Or, set up a condiment bar, serve the hot dogs, and let the children make their own ultimate hot dog. Don’t forget ketchup, mustard, onions, chili, grated cheese, pickle relish, and jalapeño peppers for the adventurous. Serve with potato chips, and pass around a tray of fresh fruits and vegetables. This hands-on meal is just as big a winner at home as it is at the ballpark - both preparation and clean-up are a snap! Another must for sports fans are peanuts! Place bowls of peanuts on the table during the party for snacking, and don’t forget to set out an empty container for shells!

Energy Shake
For this recipe, you will need 2 ripe bananas, 3 cups nonfat frozen yogurt, and 1/2 cup smooth, low-fat , low-sugar, peanut butter to serve four guests. Cut bananas into pieces. Place half of each ingredient in a blender to prevent overflow. Whirl until smooth, and repeat steps for the remaining ingredients. Pour mixture into glasses and serve. Helpful hint: use nonfat milk to make a drink instead of a shake. Your guests will love this crazy concoction, and they won’t even know how good it is for them!

Soft Pretzels
To prepare these delicious treats, dissolve 2 Tbs. dry yeast in a cup of warm water; let stand for 15 min. Add 1 Tbs. honey, 2 2/3 cups flour, and 1 tsp. salt to the yeast mix. Knead until smooth. Let the dough rise for 10-15 min. in a warm area. Preheat oven to 425° F.

After the dough has risen, divide it into quarters. Roll each section into a long rope and shape it into a traditional pretzel, or any shape you like. Bake pretzels on a foil-lined baking sheet at 425° F for 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Sprinkle with salt while warm. Serve with mustard or melted cheese dip. (Makes 4.)

Note: If time permits, turn this into a party activity where guests roll out and shape their own pretzels. Be sure to double or triple the recipe to provide enough dough for all your guests!

Basketball Cake
Surprise the athletes at your party with a cake that looks just like a basketball! Make your child’s favorite cake recipe and bake using a round ball cake pan (sold at kitchen shops). Cool completely and carefully assemble it according to the directions on the cake pan.

Decorate the cake with icing tinted orange and use black piping to make the lines. For fun, write “(#) Baskets for (Name)!” on the cake, piping the birthday child’s age and name for personalization!

MVP Popcorn Balls
Your guests will have a ball feasting on these sweet treats. To make them, pop 2 1/2 quarts of popcorn and set aside. Combine 1/2 cup corn syrup, 1/3 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a medium sauce pan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a boil. Continue cooking until the mixture reaches a medium-boil stage.

Quickly whisk in 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/4 cup butter or margarine. If desired, add food coloring. Pour mixture over popcorn and toss until well coated. Spread mixture on large baking sheets or pieces of waxed paper and let it cool slightly before forming it into balls.

Lay popcorn balls on pieces of clear or colored cellophane. Gather excess at the top, and tie it with a ribbon. Add special MVP tags or draw lines on each to look like a basketball. For fun, let your child autograph the outside of each ball just like a pro ball player!
