Sports
Spectacular The Sports Spectacular has four stations: Football kick, Long Jump, Obstacle Course, and Pyramid Throw. First, determine which stations you want to use, depending on the space you have available, and decide where to locate each one. Next, create a score card for each child: list each station and leave a space to enter their time or distance. Turn this into a fun activity before the games begin and allow guests to decorate their own card! (1) Football kick: Hang 2 ribbons or use masking tape to make a field goal on the wall, or on the back of a door. Measure an appropriate distance and mark the kickoff spot with masking tape. You can make a tee out of the egg carton or have a helper hold the football. Give each child 3 points every time he/she kicks a field goal. Give all players the same number of turns to score. (2) Long Jump: This game is a standing long jump, so running starts are not allowed! Mark a starting line with masking tape on the floor. Pull out the tape measure 4-6 feet and tape it down perpendicular to the starting line, so each jump can be easily measured. Mark each jump with a piece of tape and write the players name on it. Record each players longest jump on their score card. (3) Obstacle Course: Set up an obstacle course using items you already have around the house. Mark a start/finish line with masking tape and time each player as they run the course. Suggestions: run from the starting line, pick up a jump rope and skip three times; crawl through a tunnel, under a low table, or through a large box; run to a basketball that is set on the ground and bounce it under your leg three times; run backwards to a chair, go around it and skip back to the basketball; bounce the basketball three more times; crawl back through the tunnel/box; jump rope backwards three times; run to the finish line! Record each participants fastest time on their card. (4) Pyramid Throw: Make your own version of the classic carnival pitching game by setting 6 empty beverage cans in a pyramid on the ground, or a low table. (You can substitute heavier objects for older children.) Mark a throwing line with masking tape. Give each player 2-3 chances to knock down the pyramid using a softball. (Bean bags are a good alternative if the game cannot be set up in an area where balls can be contained.) Score points for the number of cans knocked down, or off the table. At the end of your sports spectacular, award individual prizes for the fastest time, longest jump, etc. or simply announce the results of each event. Allow guests to repeat some events if they are interested. Let everyone go at their own pace, playing the games as they choose. Baseball

Trivia When its time to play, divide your guests into two teams. Set up a small baseball diamond in your party room using chairs or pieces of paper to mark first base, second base, third base and home plate. Flip a coin to see which team bats first. Batters get to first base by answering an easy trivia question correctly; team members already on base advance to second, third and so on when batters answer correctly. When the bases are loaded and a runner on third advances home, he or she must answer a hard question correctly in order for the team to score a run. At any time, a wrong answer equals one out, with three outs for each team every inning. Instead of playing nine full innings, consider playing this game until one team scores five runs! Field

a Prize Sponge Toss Relay Divide your guests in two teams and line up each team across a large playing area, spacing the kids far enough apart so that the sponge must be tossed from player to player. The container of water and empty bowl should be on opposite ends of the line. To begin, the player nearest the water container soaks the sponge and tosses it to the next player, and so on until it reaches the end of the line. The last player squeezes out as much water as possible into the empty container and passes the sponge back down the line. The goal is to transfer as much water as possible into the empty container within five minutes. When five minutes have passed, measure the containers to see which team collected more water!

Popcorn Balls Quickly whisk in 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/4 cup butter or margarine. If desired, add food coloring. Pour mixture over popcorn and toss until well coated. Spread mixture on large baking sheets or pieces of waxed paper and let it cool slightly before forming it into balls. Lay popcorn balls on pieces of clear or colored cellophane. Gather excess at the top, and tie it with a ribbon. Add special MVP tags or draw lines on each to look like a baseball. For fun, let your child autograph the outside of each ball just like the pros!
